On Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph in San Jose, California, Sunny was ordained to the Order of Deacons by the Most Reverend Patrick J. McGrath, Bishop of San Jose.
After years of discernment, formation and preparation, the day marked both the fulfillment of a long-held calling and the beginning of a new chapter of ordained ministry.
Ordination Prayer Card — May 14, 2016
The Rite of Ordination unfolded through a series of sacred moments, each expressing the commitment, humility and mission of the ordained deacon.
In a profound gesture of humility and surrender, the candidates prostrate in prayer as the Church invokes the intercession of the saints.
The Bishop lays his hands upon Sunny in the central sacramental act of ordination to the diaconate.
The newly ordained deacons gathered with the Bishop following their ordination.
Following his ordination, the newly ordained deacon is welcomed into the Order of Deacons with the fraternal kiss of peace.
Two defining moments followed the laying on of hands: being vested as a deacon and receiving the Book of the Gospels—visible signs of the ministry he had now been ordained to undertake.
Following his ordination, Sunny is assisted in putting on the vestments of a deacon, marking his entrance into ordained ministry.
The Bishop places the Book of the Gospels into the hands of the newly ordained deacon, entrusting him with the ministry of proclaiming the Gospel of Christ in word and in life.
Ordination was not the destination, but the beginning of a new mission. From that day forward, Deacon Sunny entered a life of ordained service—proclaiming the Gospel, assisting at the altar, serving God’s people and carrying his diaconal ministry into the Church and the wider community.
